A touching series by Brooklyn-based photographer Meghan Marin (previously featured here). Raised in upstate New York, Marin focuses on narrative based portraiture and draws heavily from the quiet and solitude of her upbringing. Her work investigates queerness, personal family dynamics, and the dualities within small town American life. In “Red River,” Marin grapples with her grandmother’s battle with lung cancer. The series was shot in Cape Cod from 2020-2022 and addresses themes of memory, grief, and familial endurance:

“My grandmother was diagnosed with lung cancer — it had spread to her brain and was caught too late, resulting in short term memory loss. In 2020, I moved in with my grandparents to look after her while she did radiation. Two years later, I found myself returning for the same reasons. In this work, I explore our changing relationship from grandmother and granddaughter in the moments when it shifts to caregiver and caretaker. Her memory washes in and out, her body like the tide. These images were made to honor our time together and to help deal with the guilt of caregiving fatigue.”

Meghan Marin is one of 60 artists and photographers featured in our latest book, Care. See more images below.
